Living room furniture made from kitchen cabinets

You've searched high and low but to no avail: everything is too big, too small, too much wood, not sturdy enough, not stylish enough... No piece of furniture makes the cut. A vintage sideboard? The idea has crossed your mind, but you were looking for a piece to blend in with the rest of your interior. Custom-made? It ticks all the boxes, but the budget doesn't check out. Two words: Ikea hack. We take the Metod cabinets out of the kitchen and give them a new life in the living room. Arranged as a bookcase, bench or sideboard, simply dress them up with lacquer or wood fronts to create clever storage in your living room. The icing on the cake is that you'll never find a piece the same elsewhere!

Oak veneer for a warm living room

What do all these architectural projects on your Pinterest board have in common...? Custom-made joinery: perfected to a tee to give soul to a simple square or rectangular room. The little problem being that it doesn't fit your budget, or the fact that you don't have the skills of a carpenter to make your own furniture (yet!). Ikea cabinets are for you! Dressed in our natural oak fronts and cover panels, they allow you to create a unique layout while remaining discreet. For the finish, opt for U-shape fronts or push-to-open systems to keep playing the discretion card.

Lonely alcove seeks custom-made sideboard

Parquet floors, wall mouldings, fireplace... The Haussmann charm is undeniable. Their layout, however, requires a little creativity: between structural walls and the features that give them their character, it's not always easy to find a spot for your furniture. This is often the case with the little alcoves between the fireplace and the wall. Solution? Place a few Metod cabinets there! With widths ranging from 20 to 80 cm, they fit in most spaces. Simply placed on the floor and blending in with the rest of the living room, they are both discreet and essential.

Sideboard + shelf = ultra-stylish bookcase

4 metres wide, 3 metres high. Anyone that has ever received a quote to install a custom-made bookcase in their living room knows: the total can be a little shocking! But don't give up on your books, knick-knacks and works of art yet, all it takes is a few cabinets and a little creativity... Start by installing several low 80 cm modules, mounted on legs to compensate for variations in the floor. Add coloured fronts, such as our luminous Red 01 - Terra, a matching plinth, and cover panel in the same shade to hide the top of the cabinets. Top it all off with a simple, graphic shelf, placed one metre above your sideboard, and you're left with a stylish bookcase that doesn't break the bank.

Weightlessness

Who said living room furniture has to have legs? Metod modules, originally designed as overhead kitchens cabinets, can be adapted in a variety of ways. Suspended by a rail fixed to the wall, they become a compact and unique piece of furniture that blends into any living room. The black fronts & walnut cover panels give a masculine touch, which we can already imagine creating in different colour palettes. Over to you to create your own personalised piece!

Like a sideboard

The sideboard: too often associated with chunky wooden antique pieces found in our grandparents' homes. However, it's not only confined to Louis XVI or Napoleon versions, or the Norman-style. Dust it off and dress it up in matte lacquer to add a contemporary touch to your living room. Made from kitchen cabinets, you can opt for either doors and drawers, making it ultra-practical. Add cover panels to hide the top of the cabinets, and wall mouldings to add character to this all-purpose layout which is perfect for hiding those documents or bits and bobs lying around.
