At Julie Sauvage's, from Gabrielle Paris

No need to rush! When Julie Sauvage, founder of Gabrielle Paris, moved into this architect-designed house on the outskirts of Lille in France ten years ago, she chose to take her time. Time to live in the house and make the space her own. Time to set her desires and play with constraints. Time to create collections to enhance her interior, and to serve as the starting point for her newly renovated cocoon, which is all about materials. Take a guided tour.

Heads or tails

You'd swear it's always been there. Bathed in light thanks to the monumental bay window, the living room has long been a place of passage. Gone are the coats piled up on a cramped sofa: the creation of the entrance hatch has given it back its full role. Crucial with three children! The centrepiece of the room, the fireplace now has a double hearth to link it to the dining room. The khaki limewash paint adds a touch of organic colour and enhances the honey hue of the wooden floor.

Colour power

How can you spruce up your home without breaking the bank? The solution can be summed up in one word: paint! Too monumental, the staircase now blends into the décor. "We wanted to integrate it with the sofa and fireplace so that the whole looked connected". A few coats of Ivory to extend the walls, and that's it. As for the kitchen, there was no question of touching the structure, which was in perfect condition. Julie simply swapped her stainless steel skirting board for a honey oak model, and repainted the white casing in a pinkish brown to give it a new dimension. "I feel like I've changed kitchens!

Material mix

Linen, wood, lacquer, waxed concrete, glass, wool... Julie has played with materials and nuances to create a warm interior that contrasts with the contemporary architecture of the house. The dining room is the best example, with its fabric hanging lights that seem to float above the lacquered table. Add a few colourful decorative elements and you have a full-scale moodboard of the inspirations of the founder of Gabrielle Paris!

A new era

A computer on the corner of a table, a white wall perfect for photo shoots and an annex for storage. For years, Julie helped Gabrielle Paris grow in two rooms adjoining the house. The brand's move to new offices was an opportunity to rethink the space, turning it into a TV lounge and a parents' suite hidden behind a back door. Designed using Ikea cabinets finished with our Honey Oak fronts, the TV unit has a Scandinavian look thanks to the side panels. The sofa, meanwhile, was created especially for the space before joining the Gabrielle Paris collection. "I designed it to suit my needs and desires. I wanted there to be room for my little family!"

Let the sunshine in

Goodbye piled-up boxes, hello bright bedroom! Julie has redesigned the layout of her old offices to create a soothing master suite, where wood meets linen, waxed concrete and glass. Here, the bespoke cream wardrobe is finished with natural oak side panels to give it character. The glass roof is simply made up of pine slats repainted in Ivory and DIY store-bought glass panes to let the light into the bathroom. The standard bath has been integrated into a plasterboard structure covered in waxed concrete to continue the curved lines of the furniture beneath the glass roof.

Teenage paradise

If pushing back the walls to fit a teenager's bedroom into a few square metres is a challenge, the opposite is also true! With its studio feel, the den of 16-year-old Lilas needed to be arranged to create distinct spaces. The result is a study, a mini-living room and a bathroom on the first floor, topped by a mezzanine where the bed nestles.

The great diversion

As on the ground floor, materials play a starring role here, with natural oak fittings and shades of ivory on the shower side. Take a closer look: Julie has reinterpreted the typical kitchen pass-through to create an opening between the bathroom and the dressing room and make the most of every ray of sunlight. Clever!

Same player, play again

Same layout, same constraints. On paper, the bedrooms of Auguste, 14, and Ambroise, 10, look exactly the same. But their brief was clear: "The rooms need to be different! "Julie played with colour to create different worlds for them, while making the most of the available space. Olive for the first, Ciel voilé for the second, the wardrobes extend into a study and nestles under the staircase leading to the sleeping area. Add a large plank of MDF painted in the same shades, and you have a bespoke arrangement.

Ideas that inspire us

  • The "pass-through" separating the dressing room from Lilas's bathroom to let in more light
  • The Ivory walls, more subtle than white
  • The formwork and skirting board that give a new dimension to the kitchen
  • The back door linking the bedroom to the TV room
  • The dividers that give a plush look to the TV cabinet and the arrangements in Lilas's bedroom.
